Report Manager Virtual Directory

I am trying to configure the Report Manager Virtual Directory but cannot do it. In the Configure Report Server screen, the option is greyed out (there is a tick next to it to say that it has been configured, but this is greyed out too)!

Any ideas?

Thanks

Tom

|||I think so - although this is the first time I have ever used it. - I was following a video tutorial and did everything that was said on the video!|||

Use Reporting Services Configuration (SS 2005). This will tell you if the service is properly initialized. This is where you should manage the Virtual Directory and setup the SS2K5 RS database.

What video tutorial are you using?

|||

Look in the services. Is there a service with the name "Report%" (wehere the % is for any characters following). Is the Service started ? If yes, whats the Service name ?

I am expereincing this same issue, with an install of SQL 2005 Workgroup Edition. I have looked and I do not have a service called "Report%".

|||

SQL Server Reporting Services is an optional service that can be installed with any version of SQL Server--even the Express Edition. It, like any service must be running to be functional. This means you must use one of the SQL Server configuration tools or services.msc to start the service (once it's installed). These tools can configure the service to start when the system starts or on demand (by a program like SC).

SC Start reportserver$ss2k5

This command-line function starts the reportserver service for the SQL Server instance SS2K5.

Hi,

thanks for all the responces.

Ok, i'll try and answer all the questions so far:

1) Looking in "SQL Server 2005 Services" there does appear to be a reporting service running, but it is not called "Report%" it is called "SQLEXPRESS". This Service Type is named "ReportServer"

2) Looking in the "Reporting Services Configuration Manager", it does state that the report server is running

Instance Name: SQL EXPRESS

Initialized: Yes

Service Status: running

3) On the left hand side all of the Options have been configured. Most of them are green and you can click on the ones that are. however, "Report Manager Virtual Directory" and "Initialization" are greyed out and you cannot click on them to set up the directory (although they both have ticks against them, in grey)

Thanks

Okay, I created a VPC (XP) and installed SQL Server Express Advanced Services edition to simulate what you (apparently have). This installed SQL Server Express as the SQLExpress instance and the Reporting Services service on that instance. Using the Reporting Services Configuration Manager I found that the initial Report Server and Report Manager virtual directories had not been created but the dialog to create them was not grayed out. If I clicked "new" it permitted me to create a "ReportServer" and "Reports" virtual directories.

Question: do you have IIS installed on the target system? Is the service running? To see, use the Adminstrative Tools | Internet Information Services utility to drill down to the default web site to see if it's running. If not, you'll need to install IIS (Control Panel | Add Windows Applications.

Hi,

thanks for the reply.

I decided to uninstall the SQL instance and re-install. Hey presto - it now works!! I must have installed it incorrectly as I can now create everything I need to.

Thanks for everyones help though!

Report Manager and screen readers

Hi,
One of our developers uses JAWS 5.1. He's able to navigate to a report using Report Manager, but once he generates it, he can only read the toolbar (where the Export options are, etc). He can't move the virtual cursor into the main report area; JAWS just goes silent.
Any ideas? Does Report Manager not support it or can we change something in our setup? We're using Reporting Services SP2 with SQL Server 2000.

That's not good. I'm following up internally on this right now. It may take a little time to get a response out to you because of the Christmas season and people's availability.

I have followed up internally. I am told that we used Jaws for Windows 7.0 for accessibility testing of SQL Server 2005. I didn't see the issue you're reporting come through our triage process, so I would believe that the newer version of the tool supports the HTML we output.

Can you give the newer version a try and let me know by responding to this thread if the problem is resolved?

Thanks,

-Lukasz

Report looks bad on screen but prints OK

I have a report where I'm using text boxes in a grid format. When I preview
the Report the grid looks fine, but when viewed in the Report Manager, the
boxes don't line up. When I print the report or export to PDF, however, it
is OK. Has this happened to anyone else or does anyone know of any fixes for
this? The problem you are seeing is overlapping textboxes. HTML does not do
overlapping textboxes (or other items). The other formats do.

Thanks for the quick response. My text boxes butt up against one another
but do not overlap. Is there a minimum gap that needs to be between the text
boxes in order to eliminate this issue?

You can check the Location and Size properties for each textbox to determine
if they overlap.

I have this same problem even if it is not overlapping ..
Could you check the size of the data and its space in the text box. Some of
my problem fixed by increasing the size of the text boxes. but still it is
there...

Could you post or send me a simple RDL that demonstrates the problem. Please
use the Northwind or AdventureWorks sample databases for the data.

web screen, but cuts off the lower half of my header when I print using the
print icon in SSRS 2005. I have re-formatted so the hardcopy looks great,
but then there is a blank space of and inch and 1/2 between my header and
detail. Since most of my users are view-only, I am setting it up to look
good in the web view. Now I'm trying to figure out how to disable the print
icon. (Ideally, I the hard-copy and web-view would look alike.)
Any suggestions on correcting this is aprreciated.
Thanks,

Report is not showing

hai friends
i deployed my report and in preview using vs.net i can see the report.
but once i deployed
the report is being generated screen is comming but it is not showing
report.i waited and waited still that report is being generated screen only
i am using evaluation copy is this the limitation of trial ver.we cannot see
the deployed report.
also how can i know how many days left in my evaluation version.I too have the same problem.
Though it works fine with an SQL db. The problem only occurs when using an
Oracle DB. I am using the 8i client. It works fine on my dev machine in
Visual Studio. It hangs when the report is run from a Report Services.
Its quite possible that both issues are related ?

the graphical query designer then OLEDB is used. If you use the generic
designer then a dotnet managed provider is used. I thought the managed
provider requires 9i or greater but I am not sure of that. When deployed it
uses the managed provider. I am guessing that this is where you problem is
coming from. To test the theory out, switch to generic query mode (the
button is to the right of the ...) and try executing from there.

Report hangs on "Report is being generated" screen

I am having issues trying to use a deployed report on our live server.
The report works fine in the development environment - yet when posted to
the live server it seems to work fine but hangs on the "Report is being
generated" screen.
We are still in an evaluation stage of Reporting Services and such are using
the trial version, this is installed on Windows 2003 Server. The report was
developed using Visual Studio 2003 and will be instantiated by an ASP.Net
application. The report is being fired using a
Response.redirect("/ReportServer?%2fReport+Project1%2fReportName&session=" +
Session.SessionID.ToString() + "&rs%3aCommand=Render");
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

StevenA few questions for you.
- Are you going against the same database when you deploy or a different
one. I.e. could it be a difference is the size of the data you are reporting
against.
- Does this happen when you run the report from Report Manager? If so then
we can disregard the fact it is coming from your app. If it works fine from
the report manager then that tells us a lot too.
- Is your asp.net application on the same server and is it in the same
domain?

I've answered your questions below...

It is against the same database and the subset of data retrieved is very
small - perhaps 50 rows.

Works fine from Report Manager.

Thanks for your help

has read permission from the database?
I had a similar symptom when I was testing a deployment. I was using
different login info and forgot to provide access to the database. The
Reporting Services page would come up and I could select a report to run,
but the report would just hang at the generating report stage. Dumb, I know!

I've checked the database access and the account specified in the
credentials of the shared data component of the report has full access.
