I still don't get this. I want to reference another textbox. I've tried these expressions below and get the same error. For instance, I'm referencing this from textbox6. I've put the data in a group, doesn't work. How do I reference different reportitems? Thanks

=ReportItems!textbox15

=ReportItems!ThresholdIncome.value

=ReportItems!ThresholdIncome.value,"table1_Group1"

You should be able to reference textboxes in the same or a containing scope. This first expression would return you the textbox object. The second one should work if ThresholdIncome exists in the same or a containing scope. You can't explicitly specify the scope of a report item. Therefore the 3rd one wouldn't work. What error did you get with these expressions?|||

Fang - Thanks for your help. Error I'm getting is what is in the subject -

Report item expressions can only refer to other report items within the same grouping scope or a containing grouping scope.

So does that mean I need to add a group and the textboxes can only know about each other in that group, but not any other textboxes on the report? That is what I don't understand. If it's all the same xml, why don't the controls know about each other?

|||You can refer to textboxes in that group, and the ones in the containing scope of that group (i.e. outer groups all the way up to the report level). But you can't refer to textboxes in an inner group. The reason is that when the report is rendered (combining layout information with data), there will be multiple instances of the inner groups. For example, if the outer grouping is by country and the inner grouping is by state, you'll get multiple states for USA. We wouldn't know from which inner group instance you want to get the textbox value.

Report grouping question

Hi all,

I am brand new to using reporting services. I am having a problem creating this simple report. Here is what I am trying to do:

1. At the top of each page on the lefthand side, I went to print the customer name.

2. Under the customer name, I want to print all the product this customer purchased.

3. I also want to be able to change the column widths for the product fields. Presently, if I click and drag the the column lines. the customer name field is also being made smaller which I don't want.

4. I want group totals for each customer.

Some of the above things I sort of got working. But the biggest problem is setting up the report so that when I change the column widths it doesn't change the size of the customer name. I have tried using groups, multiple tables, etc. Nothing seems to work. I have searched the internet and cannot find an example. I would think this is a common report. Like I said too, I am brand new to reporting services. Can anyone help?

Thanks,

Bob

what kind of container are you using? a list, matrix, table, etc?

if you're using a table, you can merge 2 (or more) cells for customer name to make it as wide as you need without affecting the products below customer name.

hope this helps - jen

report grouping

I have a report that shows/hides group detail with the + for expanding the
group. When the report first displays the detail is hidden (as it should be)
with the + showing. However ... the cursor will only change to a finger
(pointer ... whatever) when the cursor is placed to the left of the + sign.
The user will want to expand the detail by selecting on the + sign and they
cant. Why is this?
Example:
+ Client A
^ -- user must click to the left of the plus sign on Client A to expand
groupThis is a known bug in the report designer preview tab.
When the report is published to the report server, all should be fine and
good in the world.

report has to be so wide when you are drilling down. Is there a way to nest
the drill levels so they appear to render slightly indented rather than
spreading across the page? If it involves expressions please elaborate as I
am struggling with that aspect a bit. Thanks in advance!
